When is the instrumental case used?

Generally, we use the instrumental case...

  • to express the "instrument" used to perform an action: Он пи́шет ру́чкой - He writes with a pen
  • with the preposition с (with): Я иду́ туда́ с тобо́й - I go there with you / Ко́фе с молоко́м - Coffee with milk
  • to tell the parts of the day: у́тро/у́тром: - morning / in the morning - день/днём: afternoon / in the afternoon - ве́чер/ве́чером: evening / in the evening - ночь/но́чью: night / at night

We are going to learn the genitive case of different adjectives and pronouns.

The instrumental Case: Adjetives

In the dialogues we have seen examples of Instrumental Case (Instr.) in adjectives. Below we will learn more about it

Adjective + Noun in singular

We have highlighted the endings in the tables for each gender.

Masculine: -ым -им>

  • Э́то мой но́вый студе́нт (Nom.).
    This is my new student.
  • Я дово́лен мои́м но́вым студе́нтом (Instr.).
    I am pleased with my new student.

Feminine: -ой -ей

  • Э́то моя́ интере́сная кни́га (Nom.).
    This is my interesting book.
  • Я дово́лен мое́й интере́сной кни́гой (Instr.).
    I am pleased with my interesting book.

Neuter: -ым -им

  • Э́то моё большо́е окно́ (Nom.).
    This is my big window.
  • Я дово́лен мои́м больши́м окно́м (Instr.).
    I am pleased with my big window.

    These are my new students.

    These are my interesting books.
  • Я дово́лен мои́ми интере́сными кни́гами (Instr.).

Neuter: -ыми -ими

  • Э́то мои́ больши́е о́кна (Nom.).
    These are my big windows.
  • Я дово́лен мои́ми больши́ми о́кнами (Instr.).
    I am pleased with my big windows.
