И не друг, и не враг, а — так;
If a friend turned out to be suddenly
Not a friend, and not an enemy, but just like that: neither of these;
If at once you can't figure out,
Whether he is bad or good, —
Pull the guy into the mountains — take the risk!
Don't leave him alone:
Let him be in one bunch/tandem with you —
There you'll understand who he is.
If the guy in the mountains is not so good,
If at once he lost his grip — and down,
He made one step on the glacier — and drooped down,
Stumbled — and screamed, —
It means that next to you there is a stranger,
Don't scold him — chase (him) away.
They don't take these kind of people uphill and here,
They don't sing about such ones.
Если ж он не скулил, не ныл;
Он стонал, но держал;
But if he didn't whine, and didn't whimper;
Though he was gloomy and angry, but he was walking,
And when you fell from the rocks,
He was moaning, but was holding;
If he was going with you as if into battle
On the top, he was standing like intoxicated,
It means, like upon yourself,
Rely on him!
If he was going as if into battle,
He was standing on the top, like intoxicated,
It means, like upon yourself,
Rely on him!
