Introduction to the instrumental case
When is the instrumental case used?
Generally, we use the instrumental case...
- to express the "instrument" used to perform an action: Он пи́шет ру́чкой - He writes with a pen
- with the preposition с (with): Я иду́ туда́ с тобо́й - I go there with you / Ко́фе с молоко́м - Coffee with milk
- to tell the parts of the day: у́тро/у́тром: - morning / in the morning - день/днём: afternoon / in the afternoon - ве́чер/ве́чером: evening / in the evening - ночь/но́чью: night / at night

How are things, Lena? Are you pleased with your new flat?
Я о́чень дово́льна кварти́рой и но́вым райо́ном.
I am very pleased with the flat and with the new neighbourhood.
Вы живёте ме́жду ста́рой фа́брикой и де́тской больни́цей?
Do you live between the old factory and the children's hospital?
Нет, мы живём перед совреме́нным теа́тром. Под на́шими о́кнами есть изве́стный рестора́н "Огю́ст Эскофье́".
No, we live in front of the modern theatre. Below our windows there is a famous restaurant "Auguste Escoffier"
Я зна́ю э́тот рестора́н! Я обе́дал там с на́шими иностра́нными колле́гами. Но кто тако́й Огю́ст Эскофье́?
I know this restaurant! I had lunch there with our foreign clients. But who is that Auguste Escoffier?
Он был легенда́рным францу́зским кулина́ром. Он рабо́тал короле́вским по́варом и удивля́л всех но́выми реце́птами.
He was a legendary French cook. He worked as a royal cook and would surprise everyone with new recipes.

Да. Cейча́с я интересу́юсь францу́зской ку́хней. Приходи́ в го́сти, и я удивлю́ тебя́ каки́м-нибудь экзоти́ческим блю́дом.

Good morning, Lena! And where is Michael?
Он пошёл в магази́н за све́жим хле́бом. Я гото́влю бутербро́ды с твое́й люби́мой колбасо́й.
He went to the shop for fresh bread. I'm preparing sandwiches with your favourite sausage.
Ух ты! Спаси́бо. Я люблю́ хоро́ший за́втрак перед ва́жными экза́менами.
Wow! Thank you. I love a good breakfast before important exams.
Сего́дня у тебя́ экза́мен по ру́сскому языку́, да? Ты занима́ешься ру́сским уже́ три го́да. Ты говори́шь с небольши́м акце́нтом, но о́чень хоро́шо.
Today you have an exam on Russian language, right? You have been studying Russian for three years already. You speak with a slight accent but very well.
Ты всегда́ поднима́ешь мне настрое́ние до́брыми слова́ми.
You always raise my spirits with good words.
И вку́сными бутербро́дами!
And with tasty sandwiches!
Ха-ха. Ты права́.
Ha ha. You are right.
Dialogue 3
Приве́т, Са́ша! Как давно́ мы не ви́делись! Как жизнь? Чем ты занима́ешься?
Hi Katya! Long time no see! How's life? What do you do?
Приве́т, Ле́на! По́мнишь, я всегда́ интересова́лся ру́сской исто́рией? Я стал изве́стным архео́логом. А ты?
Hi Lena! Remember, I've been always interested in Russian history? I've become a well-known archeologist. And you?
А я хоте́ла стать медсестро́й, по́мнишь? Сейча́с я рабо́таю де́тским врачо́м.
And I wanted to be a nurse, remember? Now I work as a children's doctor (pediatrician).
Ты дово́льна твое́й рабо́той?
Are you pleased with your job?
О́чень. Я люблю́ рабо́тать с ма́ленькими детьми́. Есть ещё но́вости? Твоя́ сестра́ за́мужем?
Very much. I like working with small children. Any other news? Is your sister you married?
Она́ за́мужем за тем скро́мным у́мным па́рнем. По́мнишь, он учи́лся с на́ми в университе́те?
She is married to that shy, smart guy. Remember he studied with us at the university?
По́мню! Он ещё занима́лся ша́хматами.
I remember! He also played chess.
Да, э́то он. Сейча́с он руководи́т большо́й компа́нией. Он о́чень горди́тся его́ рабо́той.
Yes, that's him. Now he manages a big company. He is very proud of his job.

Adjective + Noun in singular
We have highlighted the endings in the tables for each gender.
Masculine: -ым -им>
- Э́то мой но́вый студе́нт (Nom.).
This is my new student. - Я дово́лен мои́м но́вым студе́нтом (Instr.).
I am pleased with my new student.
Feminine: -ой -ей
- Э́то моя́ интере́сная кни́га (Nom.).
This is my interesting book. - Я дово́лен мое́й интере́сной кни́гой (Instr.).
I am pleased with my interesting book.
Neuter: -ым -им
- Э́то моё большо́е окно́ (Nom.).
This is my big window. - Я дово́лен мои́м больши́м окно́м (Instr.).
I am pleased with my big window.
Adjective + Noun in plural
