THE INSTRUMENTAL CASE

WHEN IS THE INSTRUMENTAL USE? Generally, we use the instrumental case...
- to express the "instrument" used to perform an action: Он пишет ручкой - He writes with a pen.
- with the preposition с (with): Я иду тюда с тобой - I go there with you / Кофе с молоком - Coffee with milk.
- to tell the parts of the day: утро/утром: - morning / in the morning - день/днём: afternoon / in the afternoon
вечер/вечером: evening / in the evening - ночь/ночью: night / at night.

- Do you live between the old factory and the children's hospital?

- No, we live in front of the modern theatre. Below our windows there is a famous restaurant "Auguste Escoffier"

- I know this restaurant! I had lunch there with our foreign clients. But who is that Auguste Escoffier?

- He was a legendary French cook. He worked as a royal cook and would surprise everyone with new recipes.

- How interesting!

- Yes, it is. Now I'm interested in French cuisine. Come to visit me and I will surprise you with some exotic dish.

- Как дела, Лена? Ты довольна вашей новой квартирой?

- Я очень довольна квартирой и новым районом.

- Вы живёте между старой фабрикой и детской больницей?

- Нет, мы живём перед современным театром. Под нашими окнами есть известный ресторан "Огюст Эскофье".

- Я знаю этот ресторан! Я обедала там с нашими иностранными клиентами. Но кто такой Огюст Эскофье?

- Он был легендарным французским кулинаром. Он работал королевским поваром и удивлял всех новыми рецептами.

- Как интересно!

- Да. Cейчас я интересуюсь французской кухней. Приходи в гости и я удивлю тебя каким-нибудь экзотическим блюдом.

- Today you have an exam on Russian language, right? You have been studying Russian language for three years already. You speak with a slight accent but very well.

- You always raise my spirits with good words.

- And with tasty sandwiches!

- Ha ha. You are right.

- Он пошёл в магазин за свежим хлебом. Я готовлю бутерброды с твоей любимой колбасой.

- Ух ты! Спасибо. Я люблю хороший завтрак перед важными экзаменами.

- Very much. I like working with small children. Any other news? Are you married?

- I am married to that shy, smart guy. Remember he studied with us at the university?

- I remember! He also played chess.

- Yes, that's him. Now he manages a big company. He is very proud of his job.

The Instrumental Case: Adjectives

In the dialogues we have seen examples of Instrumental Case (Instr.) in adjectives. Below we will learn more about it:

Adjective + Noun in singular:
We highlight in red the endings for each gender.

Masculine: -ым -им
- Это мой новый студент (Nom.).
- This is my new student.
- Я доволен моим новым студентом (Instr.).
- I am pleased with my new student.

Feminine: -ой -ей
- Это моя интересная книга (Nom.).
- This is my interesting book.
- Я доволен моей интересной книгой (Instr.).
- I am pleased with my interesting book.

Neuter: -ым -им
- Это моё большое окно (Nom.).
- This is my big window.
- Я доволен моим большим окном (Instr.).
- I am pleased with my big window.

Adjective + Noun in plural:
