Nouns in the Prepositional Case

The Prepositional Case (Prep.) is used with prepositions. For example: Я думаю о книге = I think about the book.
The word "book" was transformed from the Nominative (Nom.) "книга" into the Prepositional (Prep.). "книге"
In the table below you can see different changes from Nominative into Prepositional (Nom. --> Prep.) and examples.

There are some masculine nouns that have two prepositional cases:
- Regular: it has the ending е:
              Я думаю о саде = I'm thinking about the garden.
           - Irregular: it has the ending у. We used it ONLY when meaning "location" (with prepositions в/на):
             Моя книга была в саду = My book was in the garden.

            аэропорт (airport) - в аэропорту
            берег (shore, river bank) - на берегу
            лёд (ice) - на льду
            год (year) - в году
            лес (forest) - в лесу

пол (floor) -на полу
сад (garden) - в саду
снег (snow) - в/на снегу
угол (corner) - в/на углу
шкаф (wardrobe)- в шкафу

Remember! Мать and дочь are irregular. Their prepositional singular forms are матери and дочери.

Remember! The endings of the Prepositional plural do not depend on the gender. The endings are the same for all genders and depend only on the ending of the noun in Nominative singular.

Remember these Russian nouns with an IRREGULAR Prepositional in plural:

    братья (brothers) --> братьях (Prep. plural)
    друзья (friends)    --> друзьях (Prep. plural)
    сыновья (sons)     --> сыновьях (Prep. plural)
                матери (mothers) --> матерях (Prep. plural)

дочери (daughters) --> дочерях (Prep. plural)
дети (children) --> детях (Prep. plural)
люди (people) --> людях (Prep. plural)

When do we have to use Prepositional?

The Prepositional Case is used after prepositions. Below you can find some situations that require Prepositional Case:

- with the prepositions в y на (on / in / at): Я в школе - I'm at school / Моя книга на столе - My book is on the table.
- with the preposition о (about): Я думаю о тебе - I'm thinking about you.
